About Fishing Lake

Fishing Lake is a very popular recreational lake in east-central Saskatchewan. It is located east of the Quill Lakes, south of Hwy #5, north of Hwy #16 and east of Hwy #35.

The lake is 65 feet deep, and has over 23 miles of shoreline, most of it is sandy beaches.

There are eight resort communities on this large, clean, deep, freshwater lake. Three of the resorts are regional parks, one is a First Nation Community and the rest are residential communities. There is a good golf course and also a wilderness area.

Pikezilla   Fishing is popular here both  summer and winter. There are trophy sized fish here. Northern Pike (Jackfish) that are up to 39 pounds have been caught in Fishing Lake. Other species found here are Pickerel (Walleye), Perch, and Whitefish.

Boating is very popular here too, there are boat launching facilities on  all sides of the lake.

Fishing Lake is a large, deep freshwater lake.  It is the major drainage basin for the area to the north and is fed by one or two streams into the north side of the lake. Drainage out of the lake is a marshy area at the southeast end and a series of small lakes that lead into the Whitesand River.

There have been lots of changes in the past few years.

In 2006, and again in 2007, higher than normal water levels caused widespread flooding damage to many of the communities. The hardest hit was the south end of the lake; Murray Beach, Ottman Beach, Knights of Columbus Beach, Chorney Beach and Leslie Beach.

Leslie and Chorney flooding

Murray Beach flooding

In late 2007, protective berms were built around most of the communities and floodwater was pumped back into the lake.

In 2008, rebuilding began. All around the lake, houses were repaired and people were rebuilding their lives.

In 2009, the lake opened to recreation, the golf course opened again, businesses opened, residents and tourists returned.

In 2010, construction began on Highway 310 north from Foam Lake but wet conditions slowed construction.

In 2011, a drainage channel was built to help drain some of the water from the lake into the natural drainage system toward the Whitesand River. Highway 310 was rebuilt all the way from Foam Lake to Kuroki and paved south from Kuroki to the lake. Pavement from the lake to Foam Lake is expected to be finished in 2012.
