The Quill Lakes area offers some of the best
waterfowl hunting in North America. Every fall, goose hunters travel from as far away as
the southern USA to hunt here. It must be good, they come back year after year.
In addition to geese, we have ducks, cranes,
grouse and white tailed deer to keep all the hunters happy. Many of the towns have guides
available to help you find the best spots.
There is at least one taxidermy shop in the
area to preserve your trophy, and meat storage facilities if you let the trophy sized one
get away.

...In the mid 1940s Quill Lake dried up to the
point that waterfowl and upland game were scarce. There are cycles of dry years, but the
Quill Lakes are known internationally as breeding and marshalling areas for Canada and
snow geese, Sandhill Cranes and a myriad of duck species including the mallard, the
pintail and the canvasback. Upland birds including the sharp-tailed grouse are also
popular with hunters.
...The major goose area lies around the Quill Lake
chain and the Foam Lake Heritage Marsh. The major duck area is south of the Quills.
Occasional sightings of whooping cranes will close down the season for sandhill cranes to
avoid any possibility of accidental mistake. There is a Game preserve near Dafoe and a
Wildlife Refuge at Mud Lake and at Fishing Lake. For specific details check with the local
conservation officer in Wadena.
...Areas designated as feeding stations and lure
crops are off limits until after harvest.
...The Saskatchewan deer population has increased
dramatically over the past few years. Hunting white-tailed deer is a major recreational
hunting activity in the Lakes settlement area with more than 2500 "annual hunter
days" recorded in 1988, the last year for which data is available. There are many
local facilities intended to improve the quality of life for visiting hunters, ranging
from pluckers and freezers to guides. Saskatchewan Outdoor Adventure, produced complements
of Tourism Saskatchewan and available at local tourist facilities, provides up-to-date
hunting regulations and a yearly updated list of accommodations and outfitters.
