About Wishart

Wishart is a town of less than 100 people located south of the Quill Lakes, 8 km west of Highway 35, half an hour drive from Wynyard, Foam Lake or Wadena, the closest full service towns.

It is in the middle of a large farming community but not connected to any major towns by paved roads or railroads. Some would say it is in the middle of nowhere but for these people, Wishart is the center of the world and they like it.

There is, no longer, a school or a railroad, or grain elevators or any major businesses but the community thrives and lots of small businesses provide necessary services. This community thrives mostly because of the strong cultural bonds of the people. Wishart is the center of Ukrainian, Polish, English and Hungarian culture in this hard working, farming community.

In the town and local areas, there are at least six churches, an active Ukrainian dance club, the Hopak Dancers, perogy suppers, dinner theatres and many other community events which keep the bonds strong.

Here is a map of the streets of Wishart.

Here are some aerial pictures of Wishart, can you find your house or where you played at school?

Wishart aerial picture from eastThis picture of Wishart looking to the west, shows the school grounds in the center foreground and the bowling/curling recreation complex on the left side, next to the road to Highway 35. The school is now closed, it would be a great building for some industry to move into. Look close and you can see the churches too. The railway was on the left side of the picture,

Wishart aerial picture from SWThis is a nice picture of Wishart, taken from the southwest. The railway was on the south side of the town, the right side of this picture. Wishart was the end of the rail line, so there was a Y shaped rail line extending to the south for the train to turn around. You may notice that Railway Avenue is not straight, the bend is where the rail line ended. You might be able to see traces of the railbed in the other  pictures.

This picture, looking southeast toward the town shows the churches, the park and most of the residential area.
Wishart is an old town with lots of trees and well kept houses, but there is not as many of them as there used to be.
The roads intersecting on the lower right lead to Highway 35, Lestock, Mozart, Punnichy and Wynyard.

Wishart aerial picture from NEYou can see the Main Street area in this picture, with the old theatre building (now the post office) on the right (North) end of the street and the hotel on the left (South) end.
Look closely and use some imagination and you might be able to figure out where the really old businesses were.
