Wynyard Memorial Airport
In 1990, the north-south grass runway which had served well for 30 years was replaced with a new east-west paved runway. The new runway was 100 % financed by the airport corporation without any federal or provincial government funding. This is quite a feat and shows what can be accomplished by a community through planning and good financial management. From the beginning, the airstrip committee retained ownership of the farmland on which the airstrip was located and rented the farmland to a neighboring farmer. The rental income has been used to help with financing airport improvements.
Today the airport is owned by the Town of Wynyard and the RM of Big Quill. Fuel sales and day to day operations are handled by the Wynyard Flying Club, a group of local pilots who use the airport. Wynyard Memorial Airport has a heated terminal building The airport is well used by air ambulance, business travelers, tourist visitors, training schools, ag spraying operators, local air cadets and local pilots.
